This Week's Barks

The Harsh Light of Day

"...the votes are in, and it's time for my concession speech." -- So said Xander himself.

This past week, we saw The Harsh Light of Day, and a big resurgence in dingo action players. Thanks for playing, you nifty people! (er, good dingoes?)..Now, here's what y'all said:

cemetery The thing I'll remember most about this episode is:

That funky shirt thing Buffy had on.
   Harmony. Vamp. 'Nuff said.
   Devon's stomach.
   The reprieve from funky-looking demons!

The Winner: Harmony. Vamp. 'Nuff said.

When are she and Spike gonna wear matching outfits? Cause I'm planning to vomit. Heh.

For a moment I thought:

That Parker's death would be reported on the news.
   That Harmony would die.
That Xander's mom is a jerk.
   That Snyder was Parker's dad.
That Spike would ask about Joyce.

The Winner: That Spike would ask about Joyce.

Give him time...

Parker:

Beats Scott Hope on the interesting scale.
Probably would have tried to bed Kathy, too.
Was nice enough to buy coffee.
Might get hit on by Harmony?

The Winner: Probably would have tried to bed Kathy, too.

You just know it woulda been Super Fun!

I wonder:

When we'll see the gang in class again.
How much Giles is paying Xander.
   Who's managing the Dingoes.
If Cordy will ever trek back to the 'dale.
If Oz will ever have cause to move in with Giles.
When Spike will just give up on trying to kill Buffy.

The Winner: How much Giles is paying Xander.

The world may never know...

Xander:

   Needs to win the lottery.
Should get paid for adding the fabric softener.
Needs to eat more alphabet soup.
Can probably see similarities between Anya and Cordy.

The Winner: Can probably see similarities between Anya and Cordy.

Tact much?

NEW EPISODE BONUS -- the title just breaks it up a little.

Giles:

Digs the alphabet way too much.
   Probably used to watch Homicide.
   Hasn't had much tea lately.
Should be proud that Buffy didn't drink at the party.

The Winner: Hasn't had much tea lately.

I'd like to see:

A flashback of the Devon/Harmony date.
   Whatever happened to Percy.
A rockumentary of Dingoes Ate My Baby.
   Harmony get staked by Cordy.

The Winner: Harmony get staked by Cordy.

Willow:

Should stock up on floaty pencils.
   Should turn in invisible homework.
   Should get in Parker's face.
Should teach Xander the joys of alphabetizing.

The Winner: Should get in Parker's face.

What Did You Think of These Episodes?

Then finally, your non-dingo-guided opinion about the episode. Lots of you dug Spike's return..biggest controversy was over Buffy's decision to sleep with Parker. Some of you found it realistic, others didn't. Most of you hate Parker with a fiery vengeance. And lastly, the question that was on everyone's mind...how'd Buffy's shirt get tied???

So...let's see what we've got this week, byte-wise.

But first -- Standard disclaimer: Can't post 'em all, but this week I'm posting a good number. Hope the authors don't mind being put up here, and some may be abridged. And again, no name, no bark byte recognition (even though I still like reading what you thought; make it easy on me and put a name on there, please! Thanks!)

I thought the Buffy waking up alone thing was a harsh example of deja vu. Really Harsh.

ash said:

Parker should die. 'nough said.

From Grace:

My favorite parts were the scenes with Spike, especially when he made the remark about getting his ass kicked repeatedly in Sunnydale. Slow learner.

Squeak said:

I was pleased to see that Buffy moved on from the alleged 'Immortal Love' thing. Even though she got hurt, I think it was good for the future of the series.

Dodge said:

Had a frustrating "been there, done that with Angel" feel. I wanted Buffy to tell off (or at least righteously snub) Parker as he deserved. I could buy her making the same mistake twice, but I couldn't buy her having the same "did I do something wrong" response.

From Steph:

Wow. Three sex scenes in one episode. That's gotta be a record. What's the rating on this show, anyway?

sugarushed said:

Man, this episode was just rife with sex! I guess they figured, with the gang at college, it was time for them to get it on. But the Buffy/Parker thing bugs me. All during high school, she sleeps with one guy (okay, one 240-year-old vampire). Now she gets to college, and in less than a month sleeps with some guy she hardly knows. What's with that?

But it was still better than the Harmony/Spike thing. That gave me nightmares. I mean, that was so not something I wanted to see. Ugh. It's kind of sad that the Xander/Anya combo was the best of the three. And I agree with Xander. Anya *was* more romantic than Faith.

From FurryRabbits:

I just thank my lucky stars that Parker turned out to be a big wishy-washy bone. Didn't like him; weak chin; looks like a poor facsimile of Xander. Speaking of, is Xander going to train to become a Watcher...?

Drugal97 said:

All hail SPIKE!! As usual Spike brought light to my day. Many have complained that Spike was portrayed as an abusive boyfriend. Everyone seems to forget that he had a heart, so to speak, for one person only and that sure isn't Harmony. It's nice to see that Spike has remained true to Dru in spirit.

From Cathren:

I'm suprised Spike didn't come over and roast marshmallows with Joyce!

From Jane, the Frog on the Wall:

Oh, how I hated that, let me count the ways. Heh. A word of advice Joss: you're an idiot. What was with all of this horny madness? Come on. I mean, I guess there was supposed to be a message in that: premarital sex is evil, and all guys turn into demons when you screw them. Or something like that. And yes, I hate all of those stupid politically correct terms, I'm not even going to bother. Ha.

From belle:

BTW, *how* did Buffy know where Angel was? Willy? Psychic flash? Postcard? They should really specify. I mean, the fact that she knows he's only two hours away and not in, say, Abu Dhabi, would potentially affect her mood, wouldn't you think?

....I noticed on some boards that some people were complaining about the "excessive" sex in this ep...how strange (and, dare I say, un-American?) I say, bring on the lusty wrong thoughts! (and words, and deeds). Hey, monsters shouldn't be the only ones who get to go bump in the night.

Speaking of monsters, I fully expect Parker to reappear in a later ep and meet some horrible death. Hope so, anyway.

Allie said:

This ep disappointed me. People don't have to screw each other to keep a show interesting. I'm...going to stand up for my beliefs. I was brought up with the value no sex before marriage and I'm gonna stick with it. I'm not some religious freak, but it bugs me that Buffy would give up so easy. Does that mean that Angel didn't mean that much?? She hardly knew Parker, and most of all, WE hardly knew him!! ...you're gonna have to majorly cut parts of this if you even put it up. [Just the part about music and where you said you were Christian. D'oh! Heh.]

Mark said:

I couldn't help but focus on the poor writing for the fight scenes. In Buffy's first tussle with Spike, she's already tried to stake him, then when Harmony shows up, Spike just turns his back to Buffy. She's no more than four feet away. If she was serious about slaying vampires, she could have easily staked him through his back. But then that'd be the end of Spike and he's a Recurring Character. [And we couldn't have that!!]

...several problems with the last fight. First, it takes place in broad daylight on campus and no crowd gathers to watch? Come on! Then Buffy is able to hold Spike down with one hand (!) while she removes the ring from his finger, which he conveniently sticks straight out so there's no trouble in taking if off! And then, what do you know, there is a manhole or drain nearby so he only suffers a second degree sunburn.

To top it all off, last week Buffy (temporarily) lost her soul, this week she loses her brains. She turned into a whimpering airhead. I flipped around to other channels during the Parker-Buffy scenes. I should go back and watch it all again, but I just don't want to.

Jonathan M. said:

...when Harmony first appeared to Willow, I thought, "Hey, isn't she dead, during Graduation...and, if she survived, could Larry still be alive too." [Yeah! Please? *sob*]

evilgrrl said:

Yes, Buffy, it always happens that way; you sleep with a guy and he goes all evil.

MadHatter said:

The Felicity thing is really getting to me. Are they just taking old scripts for that and sticking in demons in rubber masks? Oy. [Hey, I'm just glad they don't look like Eyghon much anymore.]

Kyla said:

I had really hoped that Parker would stay good. But no! They had to go mess with Buffy's emotions again. (Although, as one of my friends said, we should have known when he went for the "living for the now" line. But he's a good actor--it didn't sound like a line. Sigh.)

From Goddess Minerva:

Umm... it was okay... too much sex in it though. And try watching it while your mother is sitting right there with you... now that's scary! :)

kathgs said:

Did Willow have to help Buffy get dressed in that "shirt" she was almost wearing?

Deb said:

I liked the fact that Oz admired Giles' taste in music.

BA Bitca said:

Absolutely *love* Spike in case you couldn't tell. He makes everything so much fun. Almost as good as Angelus was in season 2. But don't start me reminiscing.

skatie said:

Who tied up Buffy's shirt the morning after? Parker? Buffy? The shirt tying fairies? I just can't see the scene. Enjoyed the intermingling of the story lines and the end shots of the sad and confused girls at the end.

The Black Agate said:

...critics and reviewers can keep calling Spike the Sid Vicious of the underworld, and compare him to Billy Idol, but he's so Bowie I can't believe no one else sees it but me. This is one vampire I don't want to see Buffy dust though he certainly is the top one she should. Now there's dramatic conflict for you!
